About Me
In 1983, after leaving college, I began working as a model maker for the Ministry of Defence and within a short time I found myself enjoying a successful career as a freelancer, creating miniature effects in the film and television industry and had the honour of working on a number of significant box office successes, including Aliens, Empire of the Sun, James Bond, Batman and Harry Potter.
After twenty busy years the ever more ubiquitous use of CGI for visual effects meant the end of the road for physical miniatures in the film industry. This compelled me to train myself in the skills of the modern age by learning the techniques of 3D computer modelling, CNC machining and rapid prototyping and combining these skills into my love of classic cars
Following a chance encounter in 2009, I was asked to design and reverse engineer a short run of tool room replicas of the Bugatti Royale, an incredibly rare and valuable car that coincidentally had been my passionate obsession since my early teens. This project kept me busy for over a decade and led me to form my own company with a fully equipped workshop to perform these tasks that comfortably blend my traditional artisan skills with the techniques of modern manufacture.
A career in model making teaches you to be something of a Jack of all trades and the Bugatti Royale project My time was spent in many different ways, from converting all of the original factory drawings into 3D Solid works models, designing and creating all of the foundry patterns. My model making back ground came in especially useful, when designing the unique coach work for these cars, the originals of which had long since vanished, along with the paper designs. Working from nothing but some old photographs, I created large, 1/5 scale models, which were then 3D scanned. From this data, I was able to design the ash body frames, Which I CNC machined in house.
It is with that Jack of all trades philosophy that I use to continue my career to this day.
